Why Broken Bow works for a pool stay
In the pine forest of southeastern Oklahoma, the cabin community of Hochatown has grown up along the edge of Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake. Oklahoma Today describes it as closer to Dallas, Texas, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, than to much of Oklahoma. A local operator quoted in that 2021 feature estimated about 3,000 cabins in and around Hochatown, up from roughly 700 a few years earlier.
Many of those cabins are built for groups, and a cabin with a private outdoor pool is one of Broken Bow’s signature stays. Listings here often bundle the pool with a hot tub, a fire pit and a game room.
Broken Bow cabins with a pool: how it works
Most Broken Bow pools are outdoor pools on wooded lots, private to the cabin. The detail that catches travellers out is heating. It is often an optional extra, booked and paid for separately.
One manager’s published terms show the typical pattern. Broken Bow Lake Cabin Rentals lists Whiskey Hollow (sleeps 8) with a “Private Pool (please request optional heating)” and a “$125 + tax nightly heating fee (optional),” noting that “the minimum heating is 2 consecutive nights.” The same page says “Only Registered Guests may use the pool” and “No Pets Allowed in the Pool.”
Terms vary by cabin, so before you book, ask:
- Is heating included, optional or unavailable? If it’s optional, what’s the nightly fee, and is there a minimum number of nights?
- Which months is heating offered, and does it stay on for the whole stay or can it be switched off?
- What happens in a hard freeze? Some heaters can’t keep up in very cold weather.
- Is the fee refundable if the weather turns or you don’t use the pool?
- Is the pool fenced or gated, and are pets allowed on the pool deck?
Pool, plunge or “cocktail pool”?
Listings here use the word “pool” for several things, from full swimming pools to small cocktail or plunge pools built for soaking. We label each precisely: a plunge pool is never described as a pool you can swim laps in. See private pool types explained for the differences.
Where to base yourself
- Hochatown, north of the town of Broken Bow, is where most of the cabins, restaurants, breweries and distilleries are. Oklahoma Today notes that streetlights are largely nonexistent, so plan to arrive in daylight.
- Broken Bow (the town) lies to the south, with groceries and services.
- Near the lake and park: cabins closer to Beavers Bend trade nightlife for quiet and trail access.
Between swims
- Beavers Bend State Park covers 3,482 acres, according to TravelOK, the state’s official tourism site. It offers hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, river float trips, horseback riding and a nature center. It includes the 18-hole Cedar Creek Golf Course and the 26-mile David Boren Trail.
- Broken Bow Lake has 14,220 surface acres and 180 miles of shoreline, per TravelOK, for boating, water skiing and scuba diving.
- Trout fishing: TravelOK notes that the park’s trout streams are stocked year-round, which makes the cooler months worth a trip even when your pool is closed.
Know before you go
- Park parking. Oklahoma’s developed state parks, Beavers Bend among them, require a parking pass; TravelOK’s Beavers Bend page links to it. Check the current price and what’s included before you go.
- Park office: 4350 S Hwy 259A, Broken Bow, OK 74728 (580-494-6300), per TravelOK.
- Seasons. Outdoor pools are at their best in the long, warm summer. In spring and fall, budget for heating fees, or choose a cabin that includes heat.
