How to Tell If a Cabin's Pool Is Really Private

Shared resort pools, community pools and "pool access" can all appear in a listing's amenities. Here is how to be sure the water is yours.

A listing that says “pool” can mean very different things. Some cabins have a pool on the property reserved for whoever is staying there. Others are in a resort or community where guests share a pool with neighbours. Both can be great trips, but they are not the same trip, and the difference matters most when you are travelling with children, a large group or simply for privacy.

Read the wording closely

Words like pool access, community pool, resort amenities and seasonal pool usually point to a shared facility. A private pool is normally described as being on the property or for guests only. If the listing doesn’t say either way, assume nothing.

Look at the photos as a set

Photos of a pool surrounded by many loungers, lifeguard chairs, signage or several buildings are a sign of a shared facility. A private pool usually appears in the same photos as the cabin’s own deck, windows or exterior walls. Photos can be selective, though, so treat them as a clue rather than proof.

Ask the host or manager directly

A short message before booking settles it. We suggest asking:

  • Is the pool on the property and used only by our group during our stay?
  • Is it outdoor, indoor or covered?
  • Is it heated? If so, is heating included, seasonal or an extra fee?
  • What are the pool’s open dates, and can it close for maintenance during our stay?
  • Is there a fence, gate or alarm, and are there any rules for children?

Keep the reply. If something on arrival doesn’t match what you were told, a written answer makes the conversation with the booking platform much easier.

How we handle this at PoolCabinFinder

We list only cabins whose pool is private to the booking party. Owner-verified listings have their pool details confirmed by the owner or manager; editorial listings are compiled from published sources, which we cite on the page. Every listing shows which it is and when the details were checked. Terms can still change, so the booking site and your host have the final word on what is available for your dates.
