Heated private pools

What "heated" really means on a vacation-rental listing, how heating fees and notice periods work, and how to make sure the water is warm on your dates.

Why heating changes the trip

A heated private pool stretches the swimming season, which matters most in the places we cover. Mountain nights in the Smokies and north Georgia stay cool even in summer, and the high desert around Joshua Tree can drop sharply after sunset. In spring and fall, an unheated pool can look perfect in the photos and still be too cold to enjoy.

“Heated” can mean several different things

Read the wording on a listing carefully. Heating is usually offered in one of these ways:

  • Included, year-round. The pool is kept warm whenever it’s open. This is the simplest arrangement, and the least common.
  • Seasonal. Heated during set months, for example spring through fall, and closed or unheated the rest of the year.
  • On request, for a fee. You ask in advance and pay a daily or nightly heating charge. In our own research on pool homes in the Smokies, north Georgia, Texas Hill Country and Joshua Tree, published heating fees ranged from roughly $60 to $300 per day or night, and some required notice before arrival.
  • Solar or “warmed”. Water warmed by the sun or a solar cover. Pleasant in summer, but not dependable on cool days.

How pools are heated, and why it matters

Most vacation-rental pools are heated by a gas heater or an electric heat pump. Heat pumps are efficient but work less well when the air is cold, so a pool that’s comfortable in June may struggle to reach the same temperature on a chilly October night. If you’re travelling in a shoulder season, ask what temperature the pool usually reaches in your month, not just whether it’s heated.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is heating included, seasonal or an extra fee? If there’s a fee, is it per day or per night, and is there a minimum number of days?
  • How much notice do you need to start heating, and how long does the pool take to warm up?
  • What temperature does it usually reach in the month I’m visiting?
  • Are there dates when the pool closes for maintenance or the off-season?

Get the answers in writing. If the pool isn’t as described on arrival, a written answer makes the conversation with the booking platform much easier.

How PoolCabinFinder labels heating

Every listing states the heating terms exactly as the owner, manager or cited source describes them: heated year-round, heated seasonally, heating on request, not heated, or not confirmed. We never round “heating available for a fee” up to “heated”. For a fuller comparison of heated, indoor and outdoor pools by season, see our guide to choosing a pool for the season.
